Primary Schools In Barnsley Named Best Operational Education Scheme

Barnsley’s programme of new-build primary schools has been named the Best Operational Education Scheme at the Public Private Finance Awards.

The awards, the biggest of their kind, celebrate the best achievements in partnerships between the public and private sector. By way of further information the project consists of the design, construction, finance, operation and maintenance of thirteen new build primary schools for the Council.

Barnsley’s multi million pound project began in June 2006, and now accommodates around 4200 pupils.

The buildings were designed to council and school specifications, and were developed and are now run by Carillion.

A panel of independent judges were impressed by feedback from pupils, staff, governors and members of the community about the schools’ design, layout and facilities.

They also noted the high take up of the school meal service, the sustainability credentials of the buildings, and the great provision for the communities that the buildings serve.

Cllr Linda Burgess, Cabinet spokesperson for Children, Young People and Families, said: "This is a great recognition of all the hard work put in by staff at all levels within the council, the great support of governors, teachers and pupils, and the excellent work of Carillion in turning all our visions into a stunning reality."
