LACORS Launch Climate Change Toolkit

Construction News Image
LACORS is marking World Environment Day today with the launch of its updated Climate Change Toolkit.

The toolkit - the first guidance on tackling climate change produced specifically for council regulatory services - highlights the ways in which councils are reducing their community's carbon footprint through initiatives like home energy grants, park and ride schemes and car clubs. It also provides new advice for councils who are looking to go greener on projects including sustainable food procurement, bringing empty homes back into use and differential parking charges.

A separate section looks at adaptation - how councils can take steps to build resilience and minimise the costs associated with climate change. Adaptation measures include planning for increased risk of flooding, tackling increased air pollution and dealing with higher temperatures in buildings and on transport.

LACORS hopes the toolkit will help councils build climate change measures into their everyday work, whether it is in environmental protection, trading standards, private sector housing or other local authority regulatory services.

The toolkit will be particularly useful for those councils that have included national performance indicators relating to climate change mitigation and adaptation in their local area agreement (LAA).

Cllr Geoffrey Theobald OBE, Chairman of LACORS, said: "Councils are on the front line in the fight against climate change. They already help protect our local environment by improving air quality, street cleanliness and energy efficiency and there is lots of good work being carried out by individual councils with progress on both mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change.

"However, local authorities need to do more. This toolkit focuses upon the contribution that regulatory services can make to the effort to combat climate change through measures such as transport plans, energy efficiency, encouraging sustainability and reducing waste."
