Development Work On Chorley Market Gets The Green Light
Fans of Chorley's famous covered market have been reassured that major development work would go ahead this year as planned.
Chorley Council made the announcement in a bid to quash a series of rumours and set the record straight for traders and shoppers in the town.
Councillor Peter Goldsworthy, Leader of Chorley Council, said: "There are plans for more than £250,000 to be invested in dramatic improvements to the markets - and that has not changed.
"The work will begin in the summer and be completed in good time to allow traders to make the most of the Christmas period.
"Improving and supporting Chorley Markets is a top priority for the Council and nothing has changed."
Mr Goldsworthy said that rumours that the work had been delayed and was not due to begin until 2009 were completely unfounded.
He added: "These type of rumours are unhelpful and unfounded. They have unsettled traders and are damaging to Chorley Markets, which are thriving already with a fantastic future ahead."
Work on the markets will commence in the summer and follow a period of extensive consultation with traders and shoppers.
Planning permission has been submitted for the improvements, which include dramatic glazed entrances and installation of a covered canopy over the current aisles. A new floor will be also be put down, new lighting will be installed throughout and the entire market will be re-decorated internally and outside. There will also be additional seating within the market alongside proposals for a new cafe area as well as new lock-ups to help support new businesses with extra space.
