£90.4m Roads Scheme Moves A Step Closer
A £90.4 million scheme to to refurbish the Bell Common Tunnel between junctions 26 and 27 of the M25 near Epping moved a step closer today. Roads Minister Tom Harris announced that the Highways Agency has awarded a contract for the work.
The scheme includes the replacement of mechanical and electrical equipment, and installation of new fire safety equipment. Work is due to begin in autumn 2008 and is expected to be completed by December 2009.
Mr Harris said: "Awarding the contract is an important step in taking forward this important project, which will ensure the ongoing safety of Bell Common Tunnel - constructed back in the 1983."
On average 120,000 drivers travel through the M25 Bell Common Tunnel every day, so the Agency will work closely with the contractor to ensure that delays for road users are limited during the scheme.
