Plans to improve transport links in Cornwall moved a step closer yesterday after Transport Minister Rosie Winterton approved a £34 million Government contribution towards a major new scheme in the region.
The £44 million project includes a new road between Redruth and Camborne, a new dual carriageway linking the A30 to new housing and employment areas and the conversion of the A3074 into a bus priority corridor.
It also includes improvements to walking and cycling routes in the area.
The regeneration of the Cambourne-Pool-Redruth area is one of the most important projects in Cornwall, with proposals set to create around 2,300 jobs and 600 new homes. The funding will hep secure the necessary road and public transport capacity to support the developments by improving access and reducing congestion.
Transport Minister Rosie Winterton, said: "This investment of £34 million underlines the Government’s support for new employment and housing in the region. The scheme will deliver quicker car journeys and more reliable public transport, will reduce congestion and pollution, and create a much safer environment for residents, with more walking and cycling facilities offering a real alternative to the car."
Minister for the South West, Ben Bradshaw, also commented: "The Government's decision to invest £34 million in the Camborne-Pool-Redruth road improvement scheme is a major boost to regeneration in the area and will bring wider benefits to the Cornwall economy."
The decision means Cornwall County Council can move forward with detailed planning for the scheme, including obtaining all the necessary statutory procedures and with a view to being able to start works sometime in 2010.
