Boyes Rees To Design Final Phase Of Children's Hospital For Wales

The architects behind the first ever hospital in Wales designed and built for children have won the contract to design the final phase.

Cardiff-based Boyes Rees Architects will be the principle architects on the £45 million project for the final phase of the Children's Hospital for Wales, as part of the Interserve Health Wales supply chain to Welsh Health Estates.

When complete in 2012, it will provide dedicated paediatric surgical capacity and associated critical care services, outpatient support, and research and development and learning facilities.

The restrictive nature of the site which is adjacent to the existing Children's Hospital building, dictates that construction work will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption for patients and NHS staff. Enabling works are anticipated to commence in March 2009 with completion in 2012.

This is the fifth major healthcare contract the award-winning architects have secured in the past 12 months under the Welsh Health Estates 'Designed for Life: Building for Wales' framework.

Working as part of the Interserve Health Wales team, Boyes Rees is also the principle architect on a project to reshape the mental health services in Swansea, a mental health unit development at Llandough Hospital for Cardiff & Vale NHS Trust and two projects, design of a new breast care facility and short stay surgical unit, at Prince Phillip Hospital, Llanelli.

Boyes Rees Architects managing director, Jane Boyes said: "Securing the contract for the final Phase of the Children’s Hospital for Wales was extremely important to us. We are looking forward to working again with the Trust to develop our vision and plan for the final phase to deliver the additional facilities needed.

"The hospital provides vital healthcare for the children of Wales and the design must be firmly based on their needs and well-being whilst at the same creating a striking visual addition to this important landmark building and project for Wales.

"Healthcare is one of our fastest growing sectors at Boyes Rees Architects as we continue to demonstrate our ability to design quality healthcare facilities."

Neil Holloman of Interserve commented: "We are very pleased to be working with Boyes Rees on the final phase of the Children's Hospital after their success with phase one. We welcome this opportunity to create a hospital that will offer families in Wales some of the best healthcare facilities available.

"Interserve is committed to delivery of vital facilities for the community and Projects awarded under the Designed for Life Building for Wales framework enable us to deliver first-class hospitals and healthcare amenities for the people of Wales."

Boyes Rees were involved in the first phase of design of the Children’s Hospital and the focus of the design was on the overall experience for children aiming to create an inviting, warm and stimulating environment for children. There was strong use of colour and art as a focus both externally and to the interior.

As well as design services, the Interserve Health Wales consortium also undertakes healthcare planning, cost consultancy, services installation, CDM co-ordination, professional services consultancy and construction.
