Major construction work is now well underway to repair the Middlewood Road North (A6102) in Sheffield following the landslips caused by the floods in June 2007.
Councillor Sylvia Dunkley, Sheffield Council's Cabinet member for Culture, Leisure and Streetscene, visited the site with some local ward members to see the construction works for themselves and to check on its progress.
Cllr Dunkley said: "We know what an important issue this is for local residents and commuters, so I was keen to see the extent of the construction work for myself. It's unfortunate it has taken such a time for the contractors to get on site, but the engineering requirements of the project are very challenging and, now that the contractors are on site, we will be putting pressure on them to press on with the work and to re-open the road at the earliest possible date."
Carrillion were appointed by the Council as the contractors to carry out the £2.5 million specialist engineering works required to repair the road near the Middlewood Tavern and at the British Tissues site. The full cost of the works will be met from Government funding.
Richard Peterkin, the Council’s Head of Design and Build at Street Force commented: "We will liaise closely with Carrillion to progress this work with the utmost urgency as we are conscious of the additional traffic using the diversionary routes and the inconvenience caused to local residents. This will be a very complex engineering operation, so we have appointed a company with the experience to carry out the work successfully and within the timescale required."
