Forging A Link From The Past To The Future

A traditional craftsman is working hard to 'forge' a link between modern architectural style and traditional skills - by keeping 'alive' handcrafted ironwork forging to provide a bespoke metal work service to domestic and professional clients alike - while also representing all that is best in modern architecture.

Andrew Powell, who runs Ryedale Forge - which is located close to the historic town of Helmsley in Yorkshire - said: " Ryedale Forge's aim is to keep the true tradition and methods of hand forged ironwork alive in Ryedale today.

"I have always been involved in metal work, going back to 1985 - the start of my working life - travelling around the country, gaining experience in all aspects of metal work," he explained, noting that he has worked alongside some of North Yorkshire's finest blacksmiths.

"I make everything from traditional and contemporary metal work items, wall lights and chandeliers, curtain poles, hinges and latches, to the more extensive products such as architectural gates and railings," he continued.

"A client just needs to give me their design and measurements, to suit a contract, or a private home and its surroundings and I'll forge them a 'link to the past'," he said.

"Each item is guaranteed to be an 'individual' piece - a one-off item - which is exclusive to that particular commission," Mr Powell continued.

"My work reflects both traditional ironwork forging skills as well as incorporating aspects of modern design, suitable for the 21st century," he concluded.
