'New Construction Minister Needs To Roar', Says FMB

Construction News Image
Ian Pearson MP, as the eighth new Construction Minister since 1997, must be a roaring champion for the interests of small building firms if the construction industry is not to suffer further in the economic downturn, warns the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

Brian Berry, Director of External Affairs at the FMB said: "At a time when the construction industry is suffering as a result of the credit crunch the new Construction Minister must act as a vocal champion within Government for the interests of small builders who are finding it increasingly difficult to work in the current economic climate. With banks refusing to issue credit many small firms are at threat of going out of business.

"We want the new Minister to argue the case for a cut in banking charges to small businesses and for a cut in interest rates. Reforming Stamp Duty and abandoning the proposed new tax on housing development, the so called Community Infrastructure Levy, should also be on the Minister's agenda."

Berry concluded: "Quite simply the new Construction Minister needs to be a strong voice for small builders as now is not the time for timidity but for confident bold steps to help restore confidence in the construction sector!"
