Positive Step Forward As New School Build Begins
Work on a brand new £6.5 million Sevenfields Primary School building has started and is expected to be completed in December 2009.
The multi-million pound state of the art school in Leigh Road, Penhill, is the 19th school to be built, extended or refurbished so far as part of a programme of improvement led by Swindon Borough Council since 2007.
Sevenfields Primary School will feature a nursery room and classrooms which have screened walls that open out to create more teaching space for up to 315 pupils overall. Pupils will also be able to enjoy an open IT area, football pitch and a multi-use games area for netball and other activities.
Community groups and parents have been catered for and will be able to use a set of rooms specifically for their training and learning needs.
Funds for the project were earmarked by Swindon Borough Council as part of its Children Services Capital Programme 2006-2010. Part of this funding is coming from the amount Swindon is receiving from the Department, Schools and Families as a national Pathfinder for the Primary Capital programme.
Cllr Garry Perkins, Cabinet Member for Children Services, said: "Construction of this new school shows the council's continuing commitment in providing a good education in a quality environment across the whole of Swindon. This positive step forward for Sevenfields follows a great deal of consultation between council officers, school staff, pupils, parents, governors and the local community, so I hope the final result will reflect the hope and aspirations of everyone involved."
