Construction work has been completed on a new £2.1 million state of the art centre to improve traffic flow and safety across north Wales.
The new North Wales Traffic Management Centre, at the Morfa near Conwy, will provide a home to all agencies responsible for trunk roads in north Wales.
The keys were handed over to Welsh Assembly Government officials to mark the completion of extensive building work to completely refurbish the centre, which has been taking place since October 2007.
Work will now commence on furnishing the building and integrating the communication systems into the new Operation Control Room. It is expected to become fully functional by February 2009.
It will provide a home to Traffic Wales, the Welsh Assembly Government’s traffic information service, who have a leading role in the monitoring and management of the trunk road network. From there they will use the latest equipment, such as a rear projection video wall in the control room.
Control room operators will be able to use this wall to monitor a range of images from Traffic Wales cameras across north Wales.
The Centre will also house transport staff from the Welsh Assembly Government, North Wales Trunk Road Agency and maintenance contractors who have responsibility for ensuring the safe operation and maintenance of the trunk roads in North Wales. Facilities will also be available for the Police, Fire and Rescue, and Ambulance to use the centre for emergency incidents.
Traffic Wales will monitor and manage all of the CCTV, Emergency Telephone systems, and electronic message signs around the clock, every day of the year. The Centre will also be the nerve centre for the control of all safety systems within the tunnels network from Pen y Clip near Llanfairfechan to the Conwy Tunnel.
