Lyceum Square Plans Go Public

Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council has announced plans for a major refurbishment of Lyceum Square in Crewe town centre.

Between Monday 15 December and Christmas Eve, there will be a public exhibition about the plans in the Municipal Building.

The Council’s aim is that this Square will become a focus for culture and the arts. A special effort will be made to create interest and activity in the evenings as befits its location adjacent to the much loved Lyceum Theatre.

The Square will, once completed, provide a much improved home for the outdoor market. The covered market will receive a facelift as part of the scheme.

There will be major improvements to the public realm including repaving in high quality granite materials, new lighting, and extra disabled parking. The outcome will be a much more flexible space for parking, for the outdoor market and events.

There are also plans for a brand new, modern building which will house public toilets and provide new premises for the popular market café. There will be new pedestrian spaces outside the café and the Lyceum Theatre.

It is hoped that works on site will start in June 2009 and will take about six months to complete. An award winning North West based architectural practice, Taylor Young, have been appointed to work up the plans for the Square in conjunction with Borough Councillors.
