Major UK Climate Change Report Launched In Wales

The first report by the Committee for Climate Change, the independent body that advises the UK Government and devolved administrations on long-term targets received its official Welsh launch in Cardiff.

The report, 'Building a Low Carbon Economy – Britain's Contribution to Tackling Climate Change' has major implications for environment and energy policy in all parts of the UK. Welsh Environment Minister Jane Davidson will join Committee Chair Lord Turner for the event.

Ms Davidson said: "This report is hugely significant for all parts of the UK, including Wales. It is a major contribution to the evidence base on climate change action. The Welsh Assembly Government will now study the report carefully to see how it impacts on policy in Wales and to prepare our response to the Secretary of State.

"In particular we will be studying Chapter 14 of the report which breaks down a range of options for Wales. It also considers the specific economic impact for Wales, including employment, competitiveness and fuel poverty.

"The Welsh Assembly Government has made tackling climate change one of its key priorities to deliver its fair share of emission reductions for the UK. This is reflected in our commitment to achieve annual 3% reductions in emissions in areas of devolved competence from 2011.

"Our target is intended to deliver year on year reductions and to stimulate early emission reduction. Early reductions will be critical to getting on the right trajectory to deliver ambitious longer term targets. Sustained reductions of 3% each year would enable Wales to achieve an 80% reduction before 2050."
