£15m Buildings For St John Fisher School To Be Officially Opened
A new name and the opening of state-of-the-art buildings, a floodlit sports pitch and a new chapel are further steps towards a brighter future for St John Fisher Catholic High School, Peterborough, on Friday 6 March 2009 at 2.30pm.
The Bishop of East Anglia Michael Evans will perform the official opening ceremony at the school in Park Lane, Eastfield, Peterborough, and will bless the new school, which has been built on the site of the old St John Fisher Roman Catholic School.
The school had transferred to the former Hereward Community College site in July 2007 while the new school was built. To coincide with the move the school has changed its name to St John Fisher Catholic High School and pupils have helped to design a new school tie featuring the new school logo.
The school buildings feature the latest in environmental technology including ground source pumps for heating the buildings and a wind turbine to generate electricity. The school entrance on Park Lane has also been extended to make it safer for pedestrians to access the school, and St Thomas More RC Primary School which is on the same site.
The opening will be a chance to celebrate the completion of the school's extensive expansion and refurbishment works carried out by construction company Kier.
Councillor Stephen Goldspink, Cabinet Member for education and children's services, said: "The move to the new school site will be the beginning of a new era for the school. Ofsted inspectors said the school is already making satisfactory progress with improvements in the quality of teaching, pupil behaviour and attendance.
"I am very pleased with the progress Sean and the interim executive board are making in turning around the fortunes of the school and introducing measures to ensure all its pupils receive a high quality education and the learning opportunities they deserve to give them the best start in life."
