Mill Hill School Shows Its Solar Flair

A Mill Hill school is showing its environmentally friendly credentials after installing solar panels which will be used to generate its own electricity.

Hasmonean High School for Girls installed photovoltaic panels on its roof during the half term break, which are expected to produce 4,500 kilowatt hours of electricity every year, which will reduce the school's carbon footprint and save it £590 a year in energy charges.

The work to get the panels installed was led by the school's 'Green Team' - a group of students dedicated to promoting eco-friendly initiatives within the school - supported by the council's waste and sustainability team and the organisation Creative Environmental Networks (CEN).

Funding for the solar panels project came jointly from EDF Energy's Green Fund and the government-sponsored Low Carbon Buildings Programme.

Beverley Perin, Headteacher of the school, said: "This is a project that has been led by students who have been determined to make their school more sustainable and environmentally friendly; an ethos that we totally support.

"I want to congratulate all the girls for following this project through to completion. The school is very concerned about environmental issues and I am delighted that our students have taken the initiative to run this project themselves."
