SAS International Ceiling Solution Specified For Rafael Vinoly's First UK Project

Construction News Image
A black Trucell aluminium ceiling system by SAS International has been specified by Rafael Vinoly Architects for the revolutionary Curve Theatre in Leicester. The state-of-the-art theatre is Vinoly's first UK project to be completed and turns the notion of theatre inside out by opening up views of all of the theatre's workings.

SAS International's Trucell ceiling system is an aluminium open cell ceiling designed to lie onto a 15mm SAS Tee Grid. The Trucell system integrates luminaires and smoke detectors throughout the building and was specified in a black finish to ensure a seamless design feel throughout the foyer and auditorium.

The open cell nature of Trucell fits well with Vinoly's cutting edge design of the iconic glass building which has created a theatre with an unusual and democratic feeling by exposing the theatre's backstage elements including the production, construction and technical components to the public.

SAS worked closely with the architects to ensure that the ceiling system and lights integrated smoothly with the design, while meeting the smoke handling demands of a large performing arts theatre. Bespoke cell panels were sized and cut on site to ensure that they accurately blended with the curved walls at the outer edge of the building.

The Curve features two separate auditoria, one with 750 fixed seats alongside a smaller 350 seat auditorium which will provide a more versatile space. There are 32 tonne steel walls separating the stage from the foyer and Vinoly's innovative design sees these walls able to be lifted making the stage visible from street level. The stunning open plan foyer allows views into the theatre's cafe, bars and across the stage.

The £61m performing arts centre is based in the heart of the new Cultural Quarter on Rutland Street and is at the core of the regeneration of Leicester's St George's conservation area. The Curve will be run by the independent charity the Leicester Theatre Trust.

SAS International's Trucell ceiling system has been specified at a number of high profile venues, including the Ice Bar in London and The Galleries shopping centre in Bristol.
