Market leader SAS International has supplied the recently extended Western Leisure Centre in Ely, Cardiff with ceiling solutions for the pool and changing room areas. SAS worked with the project's Cardiff-based architects, EPT Partnership, from the outset of the design process to ensure that the best ceiling solutions were utilised in the two contrasting environments.
In the pool area, durability was a prime consideration and over 1,000 square metres of the SAS aluminium System 330 metal ceiling panels, finished in a metallic silver polyester powder coated paint, were specified due to their ability to resist the humid conditions found in a demanding pool environment while integrating seamlessly with the building's design.
Along with the system 330, EPT specified sunpipes to conduct natural daylight down through the ceiling directly into the pool space. The sunpipes have been neatly integrated into the ceiling panels which required careful co-ordination. This overcomes the common problem of maintaining luminaires above swimming pools, due to the difficulty of access.
Within the changing room areas, SAS International's swing down System 150 was chosen because it provides an easy to clean plain surface that is both durable and secure along with providing access to the ceiling void for maintenance.
