Improvement Package For Plymouth Waterfront

One of the landing stages on the Foreshore will be getting substantial repairs as part of ongoing work to keep Plymouth's waterfront safe and attractive.

The landing pier at West Hoe is to get £46,000 worth of repair works to make it easier for boats to land there. The site has suffered significant wear and tear over the years and a slab of concrete was dislodged by waves during winter storms, making it unsafe.

The work which is expected to start in the late summer is part of a £134,486 package.

Councillor Michael Leaves approved the project which will be paid for through the Foreshore Renewal Fund and the Parks Revenue Account.

Last year the Council spent £400,000 striking a balance between allowing people to enjoy the foreshore as well as keeping safe. Work included installing railings on steps to the waterfront, replacing beach hut doors, maintaining slipways and rebuilding a seawall at Mount Wise.

A new sunbathing deck is now available on the site of the former men's pool and major reconstruction work on Extension Pier means the pier is now safe to use.

Councillor Michael Leaves, Cabinet Member for Streetscene, Waste and Sustainability, said: "The waterfront is a wonderful location but it's very nature means it is always going to be battling against the wear and tear of wind and waves. We know it is an incredible asset and want to make it as safe as possible."

Because this decision has been made under delegated authority, it could be subject to call-in by scrutiny.
