Pupils Get Construction Careers Taster From Lovell Apprentices
Lovell joined forces with Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH) to give pupils at Windsor Community Primary School in Toxteth an insight into careers in the construction industry.
The company, which is working for LMH on a major housing improvement programme to upgrade 1,000 homes in the city, sent along apprentice carpenters Kieran Calland and Dalton Hallal to talk to pupils about their careers and give them a chance to take part in some basic carpentry activities.
The event formed part of a careers week held by the school to encourage pupils to think about the sort of jobs that they would like to do in the future and make them aware of some of the employment opportunities open to them.
Kieran, 17, and Dalton, 19, both joined Lovell under the company's apprenticeship scheme and are currently studying for NVQ Level 2 qualifications in carpentry and joinery. The pair chatted to a group of eight and nine-year-old students from Year 4 to tell them about why they chose to become carpenters and what their day-to-day jobs entail.
Kieran and Dalton then set the students a practical task, challenging them to measure up some materials to help them create three benches which Lovell has donated to the school. The students then watched as the duo built the benches, demonstrating some of the basic skills a carpenter needs.
Lovell is working for LMH on a £6.2 million housing modernisation scheme which includes the installation of new kitchens and bathrooms in 1,000 properties in the Dingle, Hunts Cross and Halewood areas of Liverpool. The project, part of a £400 million housing improvement programme being undertaken by LMH, is due to be completed in April 2010.
