Amey To Achieve £3.8bn Of Business

Construction News Image
One of the UK's leading public services providers, Amey, has announced it is in line to achieve work worth £3.8 billion.

This follows the decision by Birmingham City Council to award the company preferred bidder status for its £2.7bn highways maintenance and management private finance initiative (PFI) contract.

Of the more than 75 project wins secured by Amey in 2009, the most recent include the North East TechMAC contract, worth £25 million over the next five years, and a number of Civil Examinations Framework Agreements (CEFA) with Network Rail, worth a combined total of £250 million over five years.

These are in addition to a number of other wins secured earlier in the year, such as the Area 9 Highways Management contract, where Amey will assume sole responsibility for the management and maintenance of motorways and trunk roads in the Midlands.

This contract is worth around £400 million including additional project work, and will last 5 years with a potential 2 year extension.

Other smaller, but strategically significant, 2009 awards include the West Ham resignalling project with Network Rail and an engineering consultancy framework panel with the South East England Development Agency.

Mel Ewell, Chief Executive of Amey, said: "Amey is working enthusiastically towards successfully closing the Birmingham contract; this would take project wins to £3.8bn. In any financial climate winning £3.8 billion of extra work would be a fantastic achievement.

"However, it is of particular significance given the current economic conditions. Our contract wins over the course of the last 7 months are a validation of Amey's integrated end-to-end approach, which offers both quality and value to our clients," he said.

"Despite a tougher economy in 2009, our clients recognise the efficiencies that our approach can bring to their business and service requirements, and are happy to invest for long-term gains.

"People management and job creation continues to be a major focus for Amey. Our successes have helped us increase our workforce by nearly a quarter from 9,000 at the beginning of the year to around 11,000 today and up to 12, 000 in the coming year. We look forward to working on these contracts and hope to maintain our momentum throughout the course of the year."
