One of the leading building services companies in the UK, SES, has signed a deal worth more than £16 million to help provide household waste recycling plants to the Greater Manchester area. 27 sites are to be built over the next three years.
Working alongside principal contractor, Costain, SES will be responsible for installing a range of Mechanical and Electrical systems that includes, extensive external lighting; sprinkler systems; external water mains; as well as highly sophisticated CCTV systems in the largest PFI deal of its kind in Europe.
Costain's contract for Viridor Laing (Greater Manchester) Limited includes the provision of five mechanical biological treatment plants, one materials recovery facility, four in-vessel composting plants, six transfer loading stations, two green waste facilities and works on 24 household waste recycling centres, spread over a 50 mile radius in the Greater Manchester area.
Waste and Waste to Energy is a growing sector for SES with a strong emphasis on Technology Development, Innovation, Logistics Management and Safety. All these elements are an intrinsic part to working successfully in this Sector and SES, and its partners, are on target to deliver Europe's largest project of this type.
Talking about the complex nature of the sites and the geographic spread, Peter Fisher, SHE Director for Costain Group, said: "It was imperative that we had a combined approach to health and safety of all employees and members of the public, as well as the security of our personnel and equipment. We've used our previous experience on similar projects to introduce a number of new initiatives to ensure that all safety and security aspects were addressed promptly and, remained a focus throughout."
