Plans For West Park Announced

Gateway and Hull City Council have unveiled ambitious plans to transform historic West Park.

Local residents and visitors to the park are being invited to have their say on the proposals, which could see £7 million invested over the next 5-6 years to create a unique and popular attraction for the city.

Designed to appeal to all ages, the proposals aim to revive the park's original Victorian splendour, but with a dramatic, contemporary twist.

The transformation of West Park is an integral part of the wider regeneration work being carried out in the Newington and St. Andrew's area of west Hull by Gateway and Hull City Council, which will see £400m radically alter this part of the city over the next 10-15 years.

Laura Carr, Interim Chief Executive at Gateway, said: "The proposed changes for West Park are very exciting and represent a major part of the work being carried out to revitalise the whole of the area. By restoring the park to its former glory we hope to provide, not only a focal point for the local community, but also create a sub-regional attraction which brings visitors in from the local area and further afield."

Gateway will kick start the work to improve the park early in 2010, with a £1.4 million project for the first phase of work to create the new Anlaby Road entrance. Further phases will then be delivered with the community involved at each stage of the design and planning process, and will be subject to further funding bids and a major submission to the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Public consultation begins this month on detailed proposals for the Anlaby Road entrance and ideas for the future of the whole park.
