Barnsley Council Selects New Partner Keepmoat To Deliver New Thurnscoe Homes

Barnsley Council has announced that it has selected Keepmoat Ltd as the preferred developer to undertake one of the largest housing developments in South Yorkshire.

Keepmoat, in partnership with Barnsley Council, Berneslai Homes and Chevin Housing Group will deliver 874 new homes in Thurnscoe over a 15 year programme as part of a major housing market renewal initiative.

As well as providing new housing, the project will also provide investment, employment and training opportunities for local businesses and residents.

The development, which will take place on land acquired through the demolition of 190 non-traditional council houses as well as adjoining sites, will see 130 new social rented properties and a wide range of affordable low cost home ownership dwellings.

This development will lead the way in housing development standards in the Dearne Valley. The first 14 social rented properties which are programmed to be built next year, subject to receiving planning permission at the end of this year, will exceed current building standards on energy efficiency by 44%, which should mean significantly lower fuel bills for new tenants.

Barnsley Council and Keepmoat are also working hard to secure the Building for Life standard, which covers design of dwellings, layout, characteristics of the development, quality green space and community facilities.

Keepmoat have been selected following a 'price restatement' whereby the council had to return to all four original bidders that were shortlisted as part of a competition to develop the site, to ask them to re-submit their bids.

Cllr Bill Newman, Cabinet Spokesperson for Development, said: "The redevelopment of Reema will be incredibly important to the regeneration of Thurnscoe. The scheme will provide a range of new homes for local people to buy or rent, and offer opportunities for people who have left the area to return, as well as attracting new residents to help support local business and shops."
