More than 1,000 UK businesses have won contracts worth over £5 billion to help build the venues and infrastructure for the London 2012 Games.
These contracts have generated thousands more supply chain opportunities for other businesses.
New figures published by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) show that small businesses continue to win the bulk of the work and that the supply chains are spread across the UK. For example, a Scottish company has designed the electrical substation built on the Olympic Park; a Welsh company is providing the steel for the Aquatics Centre roof; and a company from Bolton is providing the steel for the Olympic Stadium.
The figures show that 98% of the contracts that have been awarded have gone to UK companies, with 68%of these being small- and medium-sized businesses.
ODA Chairman John Armitt said: "Thousands of companies across the UK are already winning gold from London 2012. Businesses of all sizes and from every sector are working together to deliver the largest project this country has seen for generations and are reaping the benefits of millions of pounds worth of work.
"There are still golden opportunities up for grabs through the UK-wide supply chains, so companies should sign up to CompeteFor to be part of a unique opportunity to showcase UK plc to the world."
