Ecological Mitigation Contracting At It’s Best – Including Habitat Creation and Translocation Services for all Protected Fauna and Flora Species.

If protected species such as Great Crested Newts, Reptiles, Snakes, Water Voles, Bats, Badgers and Otters are impacting on your business or your clients business? Using Herpetosure products and Three Shires Ecological contracting services can greatly reduce the financial and timing impacts on projects. Our sensitive yet progressive methodologies mean that we are able to hit even the tightest project deadlines whilst surpassing all the ecological requirements.

As part of the Herpetosure Alliance, Three Shires Ecological delivers the Herpetosure® Fencing System, used by many of the UK’s leading construction, civil engineering and house building companies for the control of newt, reptile, snake and water vole populations. Such is our regard in the industry that the Herpetosure Alliance of contractors were named as finalists in the Construction News Specialist Award 2008.

Herpetosure has developed the most sustainable and technically innovative product on the market and by combining it with the Three Shires service is guaranteed to make projects move forward.

So often Three Shires are contacted at short notice to deal with ecological issues that are already negatively impacting on project deadlines and where costs have already begun to spiral. The reason for this is that inferior materials have failed to do the job or that communications between client/contractor and consulting ecologists have broken down due to conflicting interests; and it is here that Three Shires can really help.

Our services are always delivered in an ecologically sensitive way, using products that deliver maximum species protection and resistance to vandalism, whilst demonstrating 100% recycleability and sustainability; areas that are naturally vital considerations to consulting ecologist on site. This completeness of ecological service is matched by our ability hit tight client deadlines moving projects forward, minimising finacial and timing impacts.

In addition to our ecological works our group provides all traditional timber and steel fencing systems (Highways Sector Scheme 2A Accredited), vegetation clearance, hedgerow and woodland planting and forestry services, which act to complement our holistic and proactive ecological service.

Newt Fencing

Temporary and Permanent – see links below for full fencing specifications

In 2008 Three Shires installed over 80,000 metres of newt fencing, most of which being the patented Herpetosure newt fencing system. As well as Herpetosure newt fencing Three Shires continues to install the more temporary newt fencing systems.

Three Shires can advise as to which newt fencing system may be most suitable for your site conditions, ensuring that ongoing costs are not incurred due to vandalism or newt fencing degradation – for example should newt fencing be required on a site with public access, there may be potential for vandal damage. The costs of repairing the costant damage caused to the newt fencing could be huge. An other example is where newt fencing is required for long durations, damaging UV rays could render traditional newt fencing unfit for purpose and in some cases invalidate your NE licence – one option available is to use the Herpetosure newt fencing system which is vandal resistant, fire retardant and is guaranteed against UV damage for up to 30 years – using Herpetosure newt fencing has been proven to reduce ongoing maintenance costs by up to 98% when compared with traditional timber and plastic newt fencing.

How Herpetosure Newt Fencing, Reptile Fencing, Snake Fencing and Water Vole fencing works
The newt fencing panels are fitted either into a 300 × 50mm (the same for reptile fencing and snake fencing) or 500 × 50mm (Water vole fencing) slit created by a V backed sub soiler or “wiz" plough pulled by a tractor or in a trench excavated using a chain trencher or mini digger. Alternatively, if necessary, the trench is dug by hand.

The preferred newt fencing method for best results and most efficient fitment is the slitting method, where conditions suit. Once the newt fencing panels are sited the slit is closed up by driving back along the line of the newt fence with a tractor, vehicle or compacted by hand. This creates a total seal between the soil and the newt fencing panels, which are fitted to the side of the trench nearest to the relevant population or the inside if a containment area. The newt fencing panels are overlapped by 50mm then secured by aluminium blind rivets along the overlap joint. Newt fencing panels can be cut down or the overlap increased to allow for uneven ground or contours.

Herpetosure® newt fencing is designed to be reusable and recyclable, it also has a high level of impact resistance, therefore offering a much higher level of boundary security and removing the need to landfill expired fencing materials at the end of the project. Zero project waste.
