GALVANIZING FIRM HELPS PROTECT NEW POLICE HQ
A leading galvanizing organisation has played a key role in the construction of a new £multi-million police headquarters in Durham.
Metaltreat, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, has galvanized 3.5 tonnes of steel gates on behalf of Middleton Forge Ltd as part of the £14 million construction of a new state-of-the-art police headquarters at Aykley Heads in Durham.
The project saw the plant provide its hot-dip galvanizing treatment to the site’s three metre high automated and manually operated louvred gates which form part of the new facility set to house around 600 members of staff and a number of departments. The construction was halted last October after it was thought endangered newts were hibernating on-site, however work began after measures were agreed to protect the species, including the installation of newt-proof fence.
Iain McBeath, Commercial Manager at Metaltreat, explained: “It was a pleasure to once again partner with Middleton Forge and help support such a prestigious project. We were called upon to galvanize and powder coat the fencing and gates which will ensure a long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing finish.”
Neil Wallace, Director of Middleton Forge Ltd, said: “We were delighted to secure the sub contract for temporary and permanent fencing on the scheme, and due to the ecological sensitive nature of the site we were able to offer the main contractor a tangible solution in the form of newt proof fencing and amphibian traps. The product lent itself to being galvanised, and although it was also powder coated, I feel happier in the knowledge it has been galvanised underneath.”
Wedge Group Galvanizing is the largest hot-dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years. With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, the firm offers a truly national galvanizing service.
