Japanese Knotweed Eradication
Japanese Knotweed was introduced to the United Kingdom in 1824 as an ornamental plant and also as cattle feed. It is now considered to be the world’s most invasive species of plant being spread through rhizomes as small a broken pencil tip. Under the Wildlife and Countryside act of 1981 and the Environmental Protection act of 1990, landowners have a duty of care to be proactive in their treatment of it. Planning permission will generally be refused where landowners don’t have an evidenced and robust eradication programme in position.

Operating throughout London and the South East, Avondale provides a total eradication service beginning with a comprehensive site survey, including an ecological study, conducted by our in-house specialists The report will identify the most effective method for eradication and present a series of options to the client.

Direct stem injection is highly targeted, very effective and is our preferred method for eradication despite being labour intensive. The maximum amount of dose gets right into the plant and to the root system quickly leading to a high success rate and low need for retreatment.

A herbicide spay can be applied when the plant is in leaf that will be absorbed – translocated – to the root system killing it off. This treatment works best when there is little wind, no rain and no danger of overspray onto vulnerable surfaces e.g. water course. Especially useful for large areas of infestation.

In some instances the only solution is to dig out the entire area and remove from site. Fortunately, Avondale has a waste carrier’s licence and can remove and safely dispose of the infected material.

Other options include creating cells made from plant proof membranes welded shut and buried on site at a depth of three metres. This method works well where no further digging is envisaged e.g. car park.

Further treatments may be necessary to deal with regrowth before the plant is totally eradicated.
